Our English Drama Competition!

Joy, Me and Mareen

I’m lucky, aren’t I? This semester I picked the topic “drama,” and, dahlah! Here they are! Performances everywhere beside me! This time we are no longer the audience sit in front of the stage, we have our costumes on and act!
Divided into six groups, our class is going to prepare for a small English context. It would be like the miniature of the Grand English Drama.
Our group decided to move the Holly Wood movie MIB on the stage. We adapted some of the details to saving characters from the fairytales that doesn’t know one another are fierce aliens.. For instance, we have to save Princess Snow White, for she doesn’t know her dwarfs are from Mars and shall eat her after the afternoon tea. I acted as the senior agent K, Eric as agent J. we really enjoyed making cool poses with guns in our hands!!

The other five groups were all so amazing. There was a story telling how a home-guy (or so called “otaku”) pursues his loved one and wins her heart by being just who he is. There was a story of four sisters’ journey of saving the prince, but found the prince loves a man in the end. There was a story talking about the awareness of a lazy student…… (sorry I couldn’t name them all, if you have a strong urge to promote your drama, please leave some words below, thanks) They are all extremely creative! And I found our cells of acting unexpectedly active!! Hahaha! The one I like most is the play called The Lord of the Ring(?). It was the story of a telephone information woman. She helped many people deal with their difficulties in life through tender and comforting words but lives a hard life herself. In the end she died of the serious disease, but brought together the people who she helped—four connected people. They saw the true heart within each other at her funeral. Ohhhh, I almost cried when I saw the last scene where they met each other surprisingly in the funeral! I believe many other classmates did shed a tear on the spot.
Our MIB won the prize of special effect and costume. The prize was an envelope, an envelope with …guess what’s inside?...A piece of paper written “Special Effect and Costume Prize”—or something like that—only. We were kinda disappointed at first, but felt better when we know every group had gotten the same thing. Alright, the whole competition thing was just for fun, obviously; and we did have fun!
So, it’s fun!!!!!!!!!+w+

Hairspray--Grand English Drama of DFLL

After 8 months of practicing and hard-work, the yearly big deal—Grand English Drama, HAIRSPRAY, goes on the stage!!
…Okay, I know it was almost a month ago…Anyways, the Grand English Drama is the tradition of Department of Foreign Language and Literature, and has won compliments among the other universities. The shows are Broadway-styled, with songs and dances accompany the lines. It’s been 25 tiring yet glorious years for the directing professor Chong Ging-tong, who is our Listening teacher as well.
This year the senior students of our department prepared the famous musical “Hairspray,” which had just been made into a movie these years, also a play I like very much. Me and my friends served as the staffs in the theatre during the two days of performance, and it was our pleasure to be included into the show!

We watch the show for the very first time in the theatre, just like the other audience. The performance was so exciting that we, the staffs, could hardly sit still in our seats! We kept yelling and applauding with a hall of audience because they are just amazing! I can’t explain how grandeur, how spectacular or how professional their performance was—and too bad it didn’t allow pictures taken during the show—because the magic of the stage design, the dances, even the live music played by the students from Department of Music, cannot be described clearly through my humble words. I love the design of “I Can Hear the Bells” the most, in which Link—the main actor—act like a doll controlled by Tracy. It was so creative and extremely cute! The black man Seaweed sang terrific and his dance were simply awesome!
All I can tell you is, the songs were great, the dances were perfect, and our friend Chiquita looked exactly like her role “Little Inez.” After watching the show, I couldn’t stop singing for days; I’m still singing even now when I’m writing about it! I hope we can have a chance like them as well when we turned the second grade. I heard that our Listening teacher thought about retiring, ohhh, that would be a great loss! (Proffessor! Don’t go! I really love singing…and dancing, too…oh, and acting….)

My Concert--Combination of Cultures

Last weekend, 5/17, my wind band held a concert in NSYSU Sun Yat-san Hall. What made this performance special and outstanding was that, we cooperated with the school Chinese Orchestra!
It was for the gathering of money at first because Sun Yat-san Hall was too expensive to rent for small school bands. But the more we played together, the more interesting we found! First, the instruments in the Chinese Orchestra are AMAZING! Despite of their special sounds, their appearances are awesome as well—the Shen(笙), for example, really looks like the combination of the barrels; and it sounds like an electronic piano to me!
I heard an anecdote of Shen on the internet once: a Shen player was going home. On his way, he met the police officer checking the driver’s licenses of the passers-by. Noticing the mysterious box on the back seat, the police officer demand that he open the box. However, after he opened it, the policeman became cautious and asked him if it was some kind of transformed guns or other unknown arm. After the long argue, the poor driver could do nothing but play his Shen on the middle of the road in order to prove his innocent. It’s very hilarious, but I can understand why the officer did it when I saw the marvelous instrument myself!
I also played Suona(嗩吶) for the first time. I lend my clarinet to my friend, the Suona player, in exchange. It was so amusing! The last two songs, we two bands played together to show that western music and Chinese music can merge into one. The song “One Night in Beijing” was fabulous! I haven’t gotten the video yet, but as soon as I have it I will post it on my blog. (pic: I'm the first one from the left!)This special performance made me understand Chinese orchestra better and allowed me to admire their music more closely. There are really a great difference between Chinese music and western music. Western wind band sounds strong, powerful and emotional; while the Chinese orchestra sounds more delicate and gentle, almost like human voices. My friend in the Chinese orchestra told me that he loved the momentum of the wind band and I told him my ideas toward his. We were both glad to hear that someone admire us in a totally different perspective! What an experience!

Princesses Analyzing Part 2

The following three princesses will be much different from the former three. Let’s take a look!
p.s. I only discuss them in the Disney versions, which the stories are milder and have perfect endings.
Princess Jasmine from Aladdin

Jasmine has strong characteristic, we can see that from her pet—a tiger. She doesn’t like to be confided in the palace and escaped from home once. She even falls in love with a beggar in the market place! Her rebellious nature made her a very unique princess.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid

Ariel is the daughter of the king of mermaids. She has the most beautiful appearance and voice among the seven sisters. However, she doesn’t like her life, and tries to be a human. Although she falls in love with Prince Eric at the first sight, it’s still remarkable that she can give up her family, her identity as a mermaid (a mermaid PRINCESS!), everything, for him. If only they don't get divorce, or Ariel would kill Eric--I mean, if I were her, I will.

Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Belle is the most beautiful, yet the most peculiar girl in town because she loves reading books. Her father is an inventor who invents strange machines and is often the laugh stock of the town’s people. The reason Belle goes into the castle of the Beast is to save her father. She did not fall in love with the beast at first, of course; but she gradually find out the cuteness and kindness of him. Finally, she says the magical words—“I love you”—and so save the cursed prince and all his servants.

To sum up, Disney is making progress in designing the characteristics of the princesses. They each became much more special, unique, and stronger too! If you ask me which character I like most, I would have to say, Jasmine rocks! She runs from her home, loves a thief and DOESN’T WANT TO BE A PRINCESS! Isn’t she the coolest princess ever? Besides, she is hot.=D
How about you?

Princesses Analyzing Part1

Disney cartoons are the best company in my childhood and I believe that to some of us they still are. One of the most fascinating role in the cartoons are the various princesses. Each of them had their own beautifulness and characteristic and can always make a little girl cry to her mom for products with their faces on.
Few months ago it dawned on me that I actually know little about them. Therefore, I decided to list them and make a comparison between them based on the Walt Disney version of the stories…

I’m going to introduce them by age, though a bit cruel. First, the oldest, Snow White. Snow White is friendly and always kind to one another, though it leads to her death before the prince came to save her—she should never take things from strangers, especially an evil-looking one. She lacks the power of judgment. Even the prince she fell in love with is the love-at-first-sight.

Next, Sleeping Beauty. Sleeping Beauty is cursed and has to live in the woods to hide from the evil witch. She is a good girl, we can tell from how much the fairy ladies love her. She dreams about the prince, the one who meant to marry her and to save her from the long sleep, very often. Her sixth sense is strong; but still, she could not save her herself.

Cinderalla, not a princess before she married the prince, was a poor, abused girl. She has been treated as a servant of the house but seldom show reluctant to her stepmother and stepsisters. She is endurant and obedient. Her marriage can be counted as love at first sight as well, which I am not really admire.

The next three stories are hard to tell the exact time they were made, so I’ll start from Princess Jasmine in Alladin to the little mermaid Ariel, and finally Belle in Beauty and the Beast. These three princesses start to have their own temper as human being, not anymore a perfect doll. The next post will be even more interesting!
